What Is a Cortado? – A Small Coffee with a Big Personality

Cortado Coffee: Small, Strong, and Smooth — A Calgary Favorite

You may have seen “Cortado” on a coffee menu and wondered,
What is it? Is it like a latte? Smaller? Stronger?

Let’s break it down!
The Cortado is a simple, balanced espresso drink that coffee lovers really enjoy. It’s small, strong, and smooth — the perfect mix of coffee and milk.

☕ What’s in a Cortado?

The word Cortado comes from Spanish. It means “cut” — because the strong taste of espresso is “cut” with a little milk.

A traditional cortado is made with:

    • 1 or 2 shots of espresso

    • The same amount of steamed milk (no foam on top)

That’s it!
The milk softens the espresso, but doesn’t hide it. You can still taste all the flavors of the coffee, just smoother.

Size: Usually around 4 oz (120 ml) – smaller than a latte or cappuccino.

🌍 Where Did Cortado Come From?

The cortado started in Spain, especially in Madrid. It’s also popular in Latin America and Portugal.
In North America, cortados became more common with the rise of specialty coffee shops.

In different countries, the style can change a little:

    • In Spain: Less milk, more like a strong espresso with a splash

    • In the U.S. or Canada: Smooth milk, microfoam style

    • In Australia/New Zealand: Similar to a flat white

🔧 Barista Tips for a Great Cortado

    1. Use good espresso
      – You can really taste the coffee, so use a high-quality, balanced roast.
      – Espresso highly recommended with a sweet-forward flavor profile.

    1. Steam the milk just right
      – No big foam like in a cappuccino.
      – Just a smooth, creamy texture – like liquid silk.

    1. Serve warm, not too hot
      – Because it’s a small drink, it shouldn’t be burning hot.
      – Around 55–60°C (130–140°F) is perfect.
