The History of the Chemex

Have you ever enjoyed a cup of coffee made from a Chemex? You have probably seen the brewer in coffee shops and even in the background of classic TV shows and movies. Its hard to miss with its beautiful hourglass shape, which is ironic given how timeless this brewer has proven itself to be.

Let’s go back to 1941 and talk about Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. A man who in his time, patented over 300 designs, from cocktail shakers to automobiles. Being a chemist, he understood what it took to extract a great cup of coffee and set out to design a brewer that did just that. Drawing inspiration from the Bauhaus school of design he came up with the gorgeous design while also using nonporous material that would impart no flavour of its own. Made using borosilicate glass with the iconic wooden collar and tie, the Chemex was born. Pure in both form and function, it made its way into history being recognized as one of the best designed products in 1943 at the Museum of Modern Art.

At the age of 66, Dr. Peter Schlumbohm passed after living a prolific, inspired and determined life. He left behind an incredible legacy that can be traced through both the scientific and design worlds. His fascinating mind led him to create many things, but none as important or iconic and the Chemex brewer, which has cemented itself as a classic in the coffee community.

If you have yet to try a cup from this masterclass of function and fashion, we encourage you to come on down to Q.Lab and try one of our many Chronicle coffees brewed to perfection in this timeless beauty.
